Well-maintained hinges are essential for smooth door operation, long-term durability, and the overall feel of your large front door. While our aluminium doors are built to last, proper hinge care ensures they function as beautifully as they look.

1. Inspect Hinges Regularly

  • Check every 3 to 6 months for loose screws, signs of rust, misalignment, wear, dust, or debris.

  • Identify sagging or binding doors early before they lead to frame damage or uneven wear.

2. Clean Hinges Thoroughly

  • Use a soft brush and mild detergent to clear dust and grime. Wipe with a damp cloth, then dry thoroughly to prevent corrosion.

  • For stubborn rust, gently scrub with fine steel wool or sandpaper and clean off any remaining particles.

3. Lubrication: The Key to Smooth Operation

  • Apply a silicone-based lubricant or lithium grease to the hinge pin, knuckles, and pivot points. These last longer and resist dirt better than WD‑40.

  • Alternatives include high-quality machine oil or graphite. DIY short-term solutions like olive oil, candle wax, or petroleum jelly can also help.

  • After applying lubricant, open and close the door several times to distribute it evenly.

4. Tighten and Adjust Hinges

  • Tighten any loose screws with a screwdriver. If the screw holes are stripped, fill them with toothpicks or dowels and wood glue, then reinsert the screws.

  • If the door is misaligned, loosen the screws slightly, reposition the door, then retighten to restore smooth movement.

5. Remove and Deep Clean Hinge Pins

  • If squeaking continues after lubrication, remove the hinge pin by tapping it out gently (usually from bottom to top).

  • Clean the pin and barrel thoroughly, reapply lubricant, then reinstall. Do one hinge at a time to keep the door supported.

6. Replace Hinges If Needed

  • Signs you need new hinges: deep rust, cracked or bent knuckles, persistent misalignment, or excessive play in the hinge.

  • Choose quality materials like stainless steel or brass for better durability, especially for outdoor or coastal applications.

7. Maintenance Schedule

  • Every 3 to 6 months: Inspect, clean, tighten, and lubricate.

  • Annually or as needed: Remove and deep-clean hinge pins.

  • Include hinge care in your general home maintenance routine.

Additional Tips for Long-Term Hinge Performance

  • Use door stops to prevent slamming, which reduces strain on the hinges.

  • Don’t hang heavy items from door handles—excess weight stresses the hinges.

  • For high-humidity or outdoor settings, stainless steel or brass hinges offer better corrosion resistance.
